May First

Labor Day

May 1st, 1886, in Chicago (USA) the American « Federation of Labor » mobilize more than 400 000 persons to claim the 8-hour working day. The date of May 1st corresponded to the date of renewal of contracts of employment.

On June 20th, 1889, the 1st May became International Day of the Social Demands.

Since 1890, the demonstrators wear a red triangle symbolizing them triple claim: 8 working hours, 8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of leisure activities. This symbol is then replaced by the flower of wild rose, then as from 1907, by the sprig of lily-of-the-valley.

Today, the Labor Day is commemorated by day off in most of the countries of Europe, in the exception notably of Switzerland and Netherlands. In the United Kingdom, it is first Monday of May which is non-working.

May Day

The lily-of-the-valley, flower of spring and of revival, is symbol of happiness.

On May 1st, 1561, in France, king Charles IX decided to offer every year by that time, a sprig of lily-of-the-valley to the ladies of the Court.

The tradition had been born.

We wish you a lot of happiness !

TANTI AUGURI A TUTTI

Il mughetto é sinonimo di felicità che ritorna e di portafortuna.

In Francia durante la festa del primo maggio si offre per augurio.

In questo giorno del primo maggio, auguriamo molta felicità a tutti !

French origin of “Poisson d’Avril”

In 1564, the king Charles IX decided that the year begins from January 1st instead of April 1st. New Year's gifts were thus offered three months earlier. Some continued to be offered presents to the April 1st one. With time, these gifts were transformed into gifts to laugh, jokes, hoaxes.
